Welcome to the place where you can learn ways to become more prepared and comfortable with translating at Parent-Teacher Conferences! You can find General Advice to know before going, What To Expect when you are there, and specific Commonly Translated Words that are used during the conferences.
My name is Jenna Kandah, and I attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I was a student in Ann Abbott's Spanish in the Community 232 class for a semester and have been consistently studying Spanish for more than 10 years. I am an Elementary Education student, so I hope this website will be as equally beneficial to you as it will be to the teachers and parents you are translating for!
I volunteer translated at Champaign Central High School's Parent-Teacher Conferences in Champaign, Illinois when I was in Ann's class, and I remember feeling very nervous and unaware of the types of words I should know beforehand and what the format of the conferences would be. After the incredible experience of translating, I wanted to figure out a way to share the experience I had and help others in the future be more prepared than I felt.
With Ann's guidance, I decided to do a research project in the Spring of 2014 where I attend Central High School's PTCs again to observe and record the most commonly used words during multiple conferences. The data I have collected that you will specifically find in the "Commonly Translated Words" tab was a compilation of information from about 30 individual conferences with different parents and teachers throughout the day for various subjects.
